Nick Powell is a Professor of Gastroenterology and head of the section of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Imperial College London, a world leading University in the heart of London. His leadership roles include; Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) IBD Clinical Research Group, lead for the Digestive Diseases theme of Imperial’s Biomedical Research Centre, member of the BSG research committee, and a member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) Scientific Committee.

He leads a large research group (https://profiles.imperial.ac.uk/nicholas.powell) in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. On the back of his research activity, he has led important policy and guideline initiatives (e.g. appointed member of the Independent Advisory Group, commissioned by the Department for Health and Social Care, to advise Government COVID-19 policy and vaccination strategy (Alexander Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology 2021), and was chairman of the British Society of Gastroenterology endorsed guidance on the management of immune-checkpoint inhibitor induced colitis (Powell Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology 2020). He plays an active role in teaching and clinical academic mentorship, and recent activities include organising international symposia (e.g. ECCO 2027 meeting, BSG meeting 2026, 2027) and he is an editorial Board Member of the ECCO e-Learning Taskforce, and is the Integrated Academic Training lead for Gastroenterology at Imperial College London. He is a Trial Steering Committee member for international clinical trials (e.g. IM011023, IM011024, IM011127). He has served as panel member and peer reviewer for major grant awarding bodies, including The Wellcome Trust (Intermediate Fellowship and Sir Henry Dale Fellowship streams), Medical Research Council (New Investigator awards, Clinical Research Training Fellowship), The Broad Medical Research programme at Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (programme grants), European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (programme grants), Crohn’s and Colitis UK (programme grants), Crohn’s inChildhood Research Association (programme grants).

He is an Scientific advisor for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Advice, Alimentiv, and serves as an advisory board consultant/chair for global and national industry partners, including Abbvie, Allergan, Astra Zeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Celgene, Celltrion, DebioPharm, Ferring, Galapagos, GSK, Janssen, Roche, Takeda and Vifor. He is regularly asked to review papers for major journals (e.g. Lancet, Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Gastroenterology, Gut). His research group has leveraged funding in excess of £20M in the last 5 years, from funders ranging from research councils (e.g. Wellcome, MRC, NIHR), charities (e.g. The Leona M. & Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, Crohn’s and Colitis UK) and industry partners (e.g. Abbvie, BMS, GSK and Pfizer).
